BusConnects: Translating the Terminology

Understanding the details of a large infrastructure project like BusConnects can be challenging, especially with so many technical terms and concepts involved. This article is designed to be a helpful reference, your go-to guide for making sense of BusConnects Infrastructure in Dublin.

These definitions outline the core elements of a once-in-a-generation upgrade to Dublin’s public transport network. With 230km of bus priority, over 200km of new cycle tracks, and significant upgrades to the urban realm planned across the city, BusConnects aims to increase connectivity and accessibility for all.

Core Bus Corridor (CBC)

Part of the overall BusConnects Programme is to create Core Bus Corridors, or CBCs. But what does that mean? A CBC is an existing road with bus priority. This generally means full-length dedicated bus lanes on both sides of the road. Our CBCs will run from start to finish of each scheme to ensure that buses are not delayed by regular road traffic. These corridors will run alongside this traffic, as well as segregated cycle lanes and tracks where possible.

Segregated Cycle Path

A Segregated Cycle Path is a separate section of the road dedicated for cycling only. Generally, this space would be protected from other vehicle traffic by a kerb. In the BusConnects programme, when we are unable to have segregated cycle paths, there will be the option of quiet roads and shared cycling on reduced speed roads.

Signal Controlled Priority

Signal Control Priority refers to the use of traffic signals to enable buses to get priority ahead of other traffic on single-lane road sections. It is worth noting that this is only effective for short distances. Imagine a road that narrows due to existing buildings or structures. Instead of demolishing through these areas, we use traffic signals where the bus lane and general traffic must merge ahead and share the road. General traffic may be stopped at these signals to allow the bus to pass through the narrow section first, thus avoiding overcrowding.

Urban Realm

The Urban Realm refers to everyday street spaces that are used by people to cross, shop, socialise, and more. This includes all street squares, junctions, and other rights-of-way. When well-designed and laid out with care, BusConnects aims to enhance the everyday lives of residents and those passing through. Urban Realms would include seating, trees, planting, and other aspects to bring a better experience for all.

Bus Gate

A Bus Gate is a signposted short length of stand-alone bus lane. This short length of road is for the use of buses, taxis, and cyclists exclusively (bar emergency vehicles). The Bus Gate allows for bus priority by removing general traffic on the road where the gate is located. To avoid confusion, there will be plenty of signage to direct drivers to other roads before they arrive at the Bus Gate.
